Fitness Friday + Kitty & Canine Holiday Exchange

Another week has flown by! Tomorrow, we’ll be traveling for the holidays to visit Dave’s family and I’m looking forward to the change of scenery. Once we get back, it’s a few short days until New Year’s Eve, and then 2013 is upon us. I’m not sad to see 2012 go – it wasn’t a bad year by any means but I have a feeling 2013 will be less characterized by a lot of the uncertainty that this year has brought. I plan on doing a resolution post after Christmas, with a mixture of personal, professional and running goals for the new year. Until then, it’s Fitness Friday over at Katie’s blog, so here goes!

Today was day #30 of the #RWRunStreak. I backed off my mileage a bit this week in order to transition to higher mileage as we go into January. I’d like to do an early spring marathon and want to lay the foundation before getting into speed work. My goal is to break 3:30 in the marathon and 1:30 in the half marathon, so I’ll have some work ahead of me.

One of our #Elf4Health challenges this week was to do a circuit workout. I already do 2-3 of these a week, so I mixed it up by incorporating a full body Crossfit-style workout that I found on Tina’s Pinterest page on Monday. I was definitely feeling the 4 minutes of jump squats and mountain climbers!

On Wednesday, Dave and I ran around Mason’s Island after he was done with an appointment at the Y. Our goal was to do three miles and take in all the Christmas lights and decorations but it ended up being a bust, as most of the run was done in the complete dark with very few festive houses to be found. Regardless, it was nice to change up our usual routes around Groton.

Today, I did 7 miles on the treadmill and some abs afterwards. I really wanted to get in a good workout before our long road trip tomorrow and I was beat after I was done. I did a 15 minute warm-up at 8:00 min/mile, and then did 10 minutes at 7:30 (roughly my goal 1/2 marathon pace), 5 minutes at 8:30 min/mile, 10 minutes at 7:23 (roughly my goal 10 mile pace), 5 minutes at 8:30 min/mile and then 10 minutes at 7:12 (roughly my goal 10K pace). The longest I’ve ever spent on a treadmill is 2 hours, so doing an hour, while not ideal, wasn’t terrible.

Besides a relatively good week of workouts, we also had a fun delivery on Tuesday! Stanley received his goodies from his Kitty and Canine Holiday Blogger Gift Exchange partner, Paisley! Paisley, who is an adorable Bichon-Poodle mix, belongs to Laura, who writes a great blog called The Luckiest in Love. I quickly added her blog to my reader after we were paired up and have enjoyed reading her posts on fitness, the holidays, her Etsy shop and her weekly Pinterest-inspired style link-up. Laura and Paisley hit the nail right on the head when it came to picking things that Stan would like. There was a big stuffed lion toy (with the requisite squeaker), a rope toy and 2 bags of treats. Laura was also thoughtful enough to include a pretty photo ornament with a picture of Stan, Dave and I that I had posted on the blog. It immediately went on the tree.

The stuffed toys are currently undergoing various phases of destruction, but it seems to make him happy. Who am I to deny him the pleasure of taking out all the fluff and scattering it all over the house?

I had a great experience taking part in my first blogging exchange and I can’t wait to do another one. Thanks to Laura, Ms. Paisley and KJ and Hannah for putting it all together!

y’know, I always try to convince myself I’m going to run and do a circuit workout, but then I finish my run or the circuit and pretty sure there’s NO way I’m doing anything else. haha! So WAY to go! :)

It’s tough for sure! There are some days where I just don’t want to do it. I used to primarily just do cardio at the gym but my running has improved so much since adding in body weight workouts – and I love the burn! I might do your burpee + ab one today!
